Call somebody fugacious and he might sock you in the jaw, just because of the way the word sounds. But what does fugacious mean?
A. Emitting a foul odor.
B. Confused and hysterical.
C. Fleeting, transitory, quickly disappearing.
D. Enthusiastic about musical fugue compositions.
Well, hold on to your hats--the correct answer is "C"--fleeting and transitory.
I think sales people can make good use of this word to tap dance around certain unpleasantries.
Tell the sales manager, "My accounts are highly fugacious."
Tell the prospect, "My price guarantees are highly fugacious."
Tell the customer, "My product warranties are highly fugacious."
Tell the spouse, "My commissions are highly fugacious."
Doesn't sound so bad, now does it? Instead of using euphemisms to sidestep controversy, just use plain English.
